Sylvia Weisz Women’s Philanthropy invites you — and your plus-one! — to join us via Zoom for The History of the Jewish Deli, our summer Pritzker event, on Thursday, July 23rd, at 7:00 PM. This appetizing conversation will feature commentary from Lara Rabinovitch Neuman, co-curator of the Skirball Cultural Center exhibit I’ll Have What She’s Having; Jacqueline Canter and Marc Canter, both continuing the Canter’s Deli family legacy; and Izzy Freeman, famed namesake and owner of Izzy’s Deli.
The ticket price is $48 for you and your plus-one and includes a special home-delivered deli box (if you live within the delivery range that covers the Valley, the Westside, and Beverly Hills). One box feeds two people. Respond by July 19th to receive your kosher, vegetarian nosh! Not in the mood for deli but still want to attend? No problem — you are welcome!
A portion of this event’s proceeds will go toward feeding our community’s most vulnerable.
If you have any questions regarding how to join this virtual experience, please contact Sylvia Crump at SCrump@JewishLA.org.
*All deli boxes are kosher and vegetarian.
A minimum gift of $500 to The Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign is required to attend this event.
About our speakers:
Lara Rabinovitch Neuman, PhD (NYU, 2012) is a writer and specialist in food culture and immigrant history. Her work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Saveur, The Globe & Mail, and other media outlets as well as apps such as Google Maps. She co-edited the book Choosing Yiddish: New Frontiers of Language & Culture and was Consulting Producer on City of Gold, the 2016 documentary about the Pulitzer Prize-winning food writer Jonathan Gold.
Marc Canter is a third-generation owner of Canter’s and has worked in the Deli for 38 years. He started the ghost kitchens in Downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, and West Los Angeles. Working seven days a week and on call 24 hours a day, Marc also manages partnerships with online delivery services such as Uber Eats and Grub Hub on behalf of the Deli.
Like her brother Marc, Jacqueline Canter is also a third-generation owner of Canter’s. A USC graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communications, she has worked in the Deli since 1984. Jacqueline is an expert on Canter‘s Deli history and enjoys working daily alongside her family on Fairfax.
A Brooklyn Native, Izzy Freeman owned several International House of Pancakes (IHOP) locations before arriving on the Jewish deli scene. He opened Izzy’s Deli in Santa Monica in 1973 and brought both a “Taste of New York to Santa Monica” and a passion for philanthropy. He has held several positions within Temple Beth Am and other Jewish communal organizations. His involvement has extended beyond the Jewish community into nonprofits such as City of Hope. Izzy is a proud father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He and his wife Marilyn live in the Pacific Palisades.
Please support our speakers during this time by ordering from Canter’s, Izzy’s, or your favorite local deli.
Special thanks to Jeanne and Tony Pritzker for underwriting the series as a loving tribute to Tony’s late mother, Susan S. Pritzker. The goal of the Pritzker series is to feature dynamic and educational presentations by top professionals, appealing to women of all stages of life.
