Ralph Hakman was born in 1925 in Radom, Poland. He was the fifth of 10 children born to Yitzhak and Rose Hakman. Soon after Nazi Germany invaded Poland, Ralph was no longer allowed to attend school, and his father was not allowed to work in his kosher butcher shop. By 1941, the family was confined to the ghetto in Glinice, the suburb where they lived. In 1942, Ralph and his uncle were deported together to Auschwitz. Ralph was imprisoned in Auschwitz until January 1945, when he was sent on a death march with other inmates to avoid the Russian military advance. He was liberated in May 1945 and eventually reconnected with his uncle and sister. After coming to the United States, he married Esther Hakman and had two children. Esther died in 2009, and he has been married to Barbara Zerulik since 2013.
