Jerry Coben
Jerry learned from his parents the importance of supporting the Jewish community through philanthropy and, more importantly, through active involvement, and he and his wife, Carol, have followed those teachings. His dedication to the Federation’s work shows his passion for keeping the Jewish flame lit for our younger generations — to ensure a bright future for us all. Jerry is a Vice Chair of the Board and Chair of the Strategic Planning and Distribution Committee; a member of the Executive Committee, the Finance and Administration Committee, and the committee overseeing the Federation’s strategic relationship with Unistream in Israel; and he also served as the Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Los Angeles Jewish Teen Initiative.
Throughout his career, Jerry has used his expertise for the greater good, engaging in a broad range of additional charitable and community activities. He was a longtime member of the Board of Directors of Bet Tzedek Legal Services, including a term as Board President, and is currently a member of Bet Tzedek’s President’s Council. He serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of American Jewish University and is a Life Member of the Board of Councilors of the USC Shoah Foundation.
Professionally, Jerry practiced corporate law for almost 40 years, first in New York City and, for most of his career, in Los Angeles. In 1983, Jerry co-founded the Los Angeles office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, where he represented corporations, investment banks, and special committees of boards of directors on a wide array of corporate finance and M&A matters, until his retirement at the end of 2008. He has also been a Lecturer of Law at the USC Gould School of Law.
